Is it possible to prevent individually modeled walls from hosting MEP wall-hosted families?
Not really but can you explain what the problem is?
Can't you just ask them nicely
Even if the wall is created as a family a face based family would still be able to be hosted by it.
Sometimes you just have to review and check things manually. I can't imagine there would be too many of these conditions in a project so you could create a specific view(s) to isolate those elements to make it easier to review.
Personally, every one of our buildings/offices (~513 of them) has at least one wall where we do not allow anything at all to be placed on it (our branding wall, totally smooth and plain except the artwork), so, I could imagine the issue coming up on a regular basis for others.
(I don't have any tips on the above, I don't think our Mechanical contractors use RMEP.)

A few random thoughts:
- If you can somehow make the wall *just* off from being perfectly vertical, MEP devices cannot be hosted to it. Being from the MEP side, the only way I can immediately think of is to use a Family or Model In-Place, using a Blend Extrusion (with the top *barely* offset from the bottom, like 1/512").
Edit: This effectively prevents placement on Plan View, but elements can still be Placed on Face in an elevation.
- I assume making the walls invisible to them would cause coordination problems, but you can make them invisible by default by mean of a Design Option or a dedicated Workset (default off).
- You can create a kind of "screen" (*very* thin) Family that hosts to the wall and has variable length/width, and place it on these feature walls, spanning the surface. There are means of preventing them from showing up unwantedly in the model (two means are listed above). You can then use Interference Check to catch the placement of elements on this wall. If this "screen" Family is placed on a typically unused Category (that's still subject to Interference Check), then the check can be very specific to those walls.
Again, just random thoughts, so I cannot say any of this would be anywhere near "best practice" or even entirely "plausible".

Melanie,
Point taken. What I meant was that there wouldn't be too many specific walls in any given project so isolating them for review shouldn't be too difficult.
