Default Replicate existing TIN and remove all Polylines

I am currently using Polylines from a GIS for existing surface. It is a 178 acres. The Polylines added to the existing TIN are slowing down my system to much. Its obvious to when I am trying to zoom in the files that the existing surface is attached to that it is the polylines and surface TIN that are taking so long to regen.

Is there a way to replicate the TIN and remove all the polylines?

    Hi Tim,

Consider placing your surface in a model drawing of its own, for surfaces adjustments only... Then DREF that surface into the drawings you need, with the appropriate style.

This will let you display, or label the resultant surface as needed without the need to have the polylines in each-and-every-single drawing.

Or, just create the surface directly from the GIS instead of going thought the step of getting polylines from it. And then use BB's workflow

Could you guys point me to a tutorial for creating surface from GIS?

BB - I have that method implemented as well as Data shortcut for the surface. But its obvious that the shortcut and or Xref is greatly effecting the speed of the file.

    1+

I obviously do not use that method presently (old habit from my former employer ); what file format(s) specifically are you using for that alternative, .GDB too, or just .SHP, etc.?

I use QGIS, so can convert to whatever as I understand it (doh! this reminds me I need to go through the instruction for adding .GDB support in QGIS).

If you're already splitting out your surface models from your other drawings, and the DREF is still too 'large' given the Style you've applied, you might consider adding a Data Clip:

Separately, I do not know how you currently manage what root Surface(s) reside in which model drawing, and which Volume Surface(s) reside in those others, etc.... Perhaps you well manage everything through internal standards, or even SSM (naming Subsets for each, etc.)?

In any event, especially when I first started working with complex projects with myriad existing, proposed, future, and volume surfaces, I found this BatchFindSurface routine to be invaluable.

    Just .SHP files

On the Home ribbon tab, pick the Surfaces Drop Down, and select Create Surface from GIS Data. Chose the .SHP data from the file open dialog, and specify the area you want.

Thanks, guys - I'll have to remember to check that out next time I need GIS.

    Cheers

Another option here is to create the surface, export LandXML of it (Output Tab), then delete surface and polylines. Once done: Insert Tab > Import Panel > LandXML, find the .XML file you just created and under "surfaces" expand and uncheck "SourceData". This will bring in only the TIN and leave all of the other source definition out, drastically reducing the amount of storage required and enhance performance. HTH
