Drawing Project Log

What are most people using for a Drawing Project Log?
We have a word doc the has all the required information
and we just use the next drawing number available.
I want to make this an excel file and have the drawing number
automatically generated. Is there something out there already?

AutoCAD 2012 format. with Projectwise drawing database.

Most places I've dealt with have project numbers coming form accounting, based on the contract. I've never had a need to generate them on the drafting side.

Typically Yes that is the way it works. How ever we are assigning the Drawing numbers and I am looking for a better way to assign and track them.

I suspect that's going to be somewhat industry specific, and dependent on your project organization and directory structure. So --- what's your line?

In the civil world, I segregate project into separate folders, with discrete subfolders for model, sheet, image, resource files, etc. and file names are defined based on a list of file content types.

Sheet numbers themselves are not pertinent to the file name, and are managed via SSM
