Question Converting a text parameter to a Number parameter

    Parameter.JPGHi Everyone,

So i have a Text Value in a parameter, (which should have been a Number parameter in the beginning), and i want to use this value (is a number) in a formula, but i keep getting errors because i cannot multiply, divide or do any boolean operations to Text Parameter.
Is there anyway to convert a Text Value to Number Value using a formula?

If i remove the Text parameter and then add it again as Number parameter i will lose all information. Any ideas?

    Thanks in Advance
    Alex

The short answer is no - you can't use text for anything.

Revit is very sensitive about the units definitions of parameters. You already found that you can't use the text parameter directly in in a formula. You also can't create a separate unit'ed parameter to equal the text to convert it. Brief video available here: http://autode.sk/1IDMVBF

This may be more trouble than re-entering the data if you have never used Dynamo before, but you may be able to add new new numeric parameters and then use Dynamo to read in the text values, convert them to numeric values and push the numeric values into the newly added numeric parameters.

To the best of my knowledge, you can convert units, but not values.

Units: Feet to Sq. Feet by * 1SF inches to millimeters (X *25.4)

    Values: Text, Numbers, Integers, etc...

"Revit is very sensitive about the units definitions of parameters."

As it should be jlondenberg....we have architects using this program. <points fingers - connect this thingy to that thingy>

Thanks, i had to create a schedule and re enter all the data, didn't took me alot of time, but it would be good to have some type of "converter" for units and/or parameters

    Cheers

Hey everyone, I know it's an old one but ran into this issue again and stumbled upon this thread looking to see if there have been any solutions for this issue throughout the years.

I remember for 2016 I had a free Excel Import/Output addin by a company "BIM One" and I thought to myself; "Maybe I can create a Revit schedule with the Text Parameter in one column and a newly created number parameter in another column, then export to Excel with this addin (if it exists for 2018, which it does) make one column equal the other in Excel and then re-import it and let it auto-populate all the values for the new number parameter." IT WORKED!!!!!!

My particular situation is converting a Fixture Unit Text parameter I use in my tags into a Fixture Unit Number parameter which I could use in formulas. The addin wasn't able to auto-populate when I first created the parameter as a "Fixture Unit type" param, but number worked perfectly and suits my use. Thought I would share. And if you're asking why we're not using Revit's built-in Fixture Unit calc feature, it's because we have had some nightmares in the past where the entire Iso on the day of submitting reversed all the Fixture Unit values because of a faulty connection somewhere but I do eventually want to get back to that.
