Default REVIT 2016 Structural Column Families overwriting 2015 columns in upgraded project

I have recently upgraded a Revit model from Revit 2015 to Revit 2016. The upgrade does not seem to have cause any issues. However when I try and load a new Revit 2016 Column family from the British Standard/UB-Universal Beams-Column it replaces all the columns in my project with incorrect sizes. I have tried this with a blank project created in REVIT 2015 with one column in it, opened the file in 2016 and loaded a new column and it always overwrites the column in the project with another incorrect size. I can still insert columns from the Revit 2015 family library but I don't think this should be happening. Has anybody else had this happen and if so do they know why?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We just upgraded to 2016 too and have the same issue. It seems to affect all beams or columns that have the same name in revit 2015-2016. Our project templates uses a lot of 2015 families and making a completly new template for 2016 isn't the most efficient solution. Were you able to fix or work around this issue?

We bit the bullet and replaced all of our old families to incorporate the new changes.
It took some time but it was worth it in the end.
