Default Server specs to host Revit and Cad files?

    Hello,

We have been hosting our files on a NAS that has a quad processor and about 2-4Gb of memory, a RAID 5 config with about 6TB of storage and on a gigabit network.
It has been fine for about 5 years now. I just wanted to get some input form others to see what they host their files on. We don't have any speed issues but I wondered if things would open up faster on a NAS that had more memory in it. Or if there was a better setup.

    Thanks

    Welcome to AUGI.

There are multiple factors that go into a decision like this... Storage performance, backup schema, rate of storage consumption with newer versions/larger models (how many years *should* that storage capacity last at that rate of consumption?), etc.

If you're content with what you have currently, then consider boosting your performance by moving the storage array to RAID10 in lieu of RAID5.

If that doesn't allow you enough storage capacity for the desired period of time (years?) in moving to RAID10, then how much RAID10 storage do you need? Will that capacity be supported by your current NAS, or do you need a new one? If a new one, what can you do to repurpose your current/old one?

If this price points are even remotely close to the cost of a Dell Outlet server, then consider getting the full server instead, and either implement FreeNAS, or Windows Server, etc. and decide what features/functionality you want to provide your environment, and who will be responsible for maintaining it.

Don't forget to consider your network as a whole, and what other upgrades you may need to factor into your upgrade budget.

    Cheers
