Default Nested Family Type Use in a Family?

Getting a little confused with family types used from a nested family (family not created by me). My scenario is, I have a strut family nested in my hanger family. There are different size strut "types" in the nested family. The family has parameters set up for CNTRL sizes and then a Type Selection (picture attached. These parameters are setup as a common - family type. I'm trying to make changes to this family (or created own). When I setup my family with this same setup. The strut does not change size when I change the size in the Type Selection Parameter. Is there a link between the CNTRL and the Type Selection I am missing? Not sure whats going on. Any suggestions?
