Question Can't Select Main Family in Nested Family in Plan View

I have a Nested Family. Specifically a downlight fixture.

Light Fixture (Main / Host Family) = Downlight Can / Housing (Sub-family2) + Light bulb / lamp (Sub-family2)

Plan View: I am not able to select the Main / Host family in plan view. However I am able to cycle through the two sub-families using the TAB key. But never able to cycle to the Main family.

3D View: I am able select the Main / Host family and the Sub-families in 3D.

Is there any way to be able to select the Main Family in a Plan View?

    Thank you!

    For starters:
    1. Try tabbing in a different location, on a different edge, maybe it will pick it up there, or
    2. Try to activate ‘select elements by face’ option, or
    3. Temporarily hide those families that you can pick up so they are not on the way, or
    4. Select all and use filter tool to deselect unwanted elements.

Also, the family in question could be pinned and ‘select pinned elements’ option could be turned off.

    1. Tried before.
    2. Didn't work.
    3. Didn't work.
    4. Didn't work.

    Not pinned.

It's a nested family. As-in a family made up of (2) families. I can select the sub-families within the host, but not the host family itself. Unless I'm in a 3D view.

Can you upload your family? It would be much easier to troubleshoot.

Are you talking about the cuboid extrusion? I have no problem selecting it (see pix).
But, because the extrusion is below the level, what you can do is to offset the view depth below the ref. level so the object falls within the view range. While in the plan view, make sure nothing is selected, click on Ref. Level in your project browser. The view properties should display in the properties window. Edit the view range setting the offset of the ‘bottom’ and the ‘view depth’ to negative numbers. Hope it helps.

Sorry for intruding, but I can't help but notice an oversight here; one I find all too often on this Forum. PijPiwo's contribution should have been acknowledged by the member he offered it to. What happened chazkelly? Did you forget your manners?

Thanks for contributing PijPiwo. I like your input on these different threads.

My apologies. I'm not a regular Forum user and I guess I didn't set myself to receive notifications for the thread.

Thanks for the response! Sorry I'm late in acknowledging.

It seems that the view I'm having trouble with was set up incorrectly. The View is the Reflected Ceiling Plan, but its Associated Level is the Finish Floor. I've tried changing the view ranges to as many different combinations as I can, but I am still only able to select the sub-families and not the parent family. I can select it in a view that is properly set up, so I will just go that route and make sure future views are set up correctly.

    Hi,

I'm guessing you found a workaround, but I'm posting here for anyone else who might have a similar problem.

I was having the same problem today.

In my case, (using a generic model family) the view where I could select the individual nested families, but not the host family, was a view where only line work was showing.

I tried adding a small extrusion to the host family that is visible in this view, and I am now able to select the host family by clicking on that extrusion.
