Default Compatibility issues with C3D 2017 and older versions

Does anybody have any info on compatibility issues with C3D 2017 and other versions?

Anybody using it yet? and if so, what are your thoughts?

looking to upgrade soon and trying to get a feel for the new version.

    Thanks,

Yes, files saved in C3D 2017 are NOT compatible with earlier versions.

It's a one way street, once you go up to 2017, there is no going back (at least not without manually recreating things via landxml export/import, etc.)

2017 is faster at opening C3D drawings, in general, than earlier versions.

so there is no "save as" in order to share the dwg with someone running an earlier version?

The drawing file format has not changed. Unfortunately, the Civil 3D model has changed. That is the reason for the incompatibility. To allow for some of the improvements in Civil 3D, the backwards compatibility was broken for this version.
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.
You will get a quicker response from your fellow AUGI members than if you sent it to me via a PM or email.

    No. It's just like it was in Civil 3D 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

You can save up, but not down.

As Opie said, you can OPEN a C3D 2017 drawing in these earlier versions of Civil 3D (2013-2016), since the base DWG format is the same... well, you know what... it's all explained in the link I provided. No reason to re-type it out here....

So are you saying there is no longer and export back to earlier versions that worked better than save back

There was never an export back to earlier [CIVIL3D] versions and there is not now.

You can SaveAs the "drawing file" R2010, R2007, etc. but the Civil Objects are locked into the highest version they are last saved in.

There has been export back to earlier versions for years at least since 2008. works better than the save back. you still have all functionality. you have to export surface and alignments etc land xml and reimport then in the exported back versions.

I think we mean the same thing in general, but to clarify for future readers....

A DWG file last edited in Civil 3D 2017 can be OPENED in C3D 2013 - C3D 2016, but the Civil components of the DWG cannot be EDITED in those versions.
You can still "SaveAs" a lower DWG version such as 2010, 2007, 2004, or 2000, but doing so only allows the DWG to open OPENED in earlier versions of C3D, still no EDIT capability. C3D objects will be proxy objects.
You can also "ExportToACAD" a C3D drawing and this will explode the C3D objects to native AutoCAD geometry. Then you can open this DWG in compatible versions of plain AutoCAD or Civil 3D.

You have never been able to take a DWG last edited in Civil 3D version X and work on it in Civil 3D version [X-1] **except** that versions 2013-2016 were compatible.

Yes but when just use the save back in the save dialog it does create a host of issues that most of my clients just really don't want to deal with
