    Default map insert

i'm trying to insert a shp file into a dwg. i typed in mapinsert, path to the shape file, select ok,
and i get an error message that says "duplicate field name c_3008943n in c:\users\wsj\downloads\haaswood NW\c_3008943.dbf."

it has a totally different file extension.....

also, my shp file only has data for FeatId and nothing else. when downloaded from the source it comes with
.dbf, .shp and a .shx files.

The correct command is "Mapimport" Mapiinsert is the command for a raster file.
Have you tried to use the data connect tool to bring the shp into Map?

my mistake, i did use mapimport. selected the shp file. all the contour line work comes in, but it has no elevations.
when trying to query in the data, my only attribute to choose is FeatId. no other data is there.
and the source of my shp file says when the same shp file is used in other GIS programs, all the attribute information is there.

as i mentioned above, the shape file comes with a number of files including .dbf, .shp and .shx

Sounds like a badly formed .dbf file. And, that's where the attribute information is held. You can open in in Excel (It's a Dbase format file) and look for the duplicate header in Row a, and change that.

    No guarantees,,,,,

well, i found out the dbf file was blank, didn't have any data in it. got a good one now. do i need to attach the dbf as a data source or as long as it's in the same folder as the shp file will it be read or attached automatically.
