Not really sure, I'll ask Jeff - I can tell you that it performs exactly as one might hope (near instantly), and suffers none of the lag that is typical with the Properties Pane open.
That said, you might also find SincPac's PGAddRemovePoints command to be a great tool:

... I personally do; in fact, I just used these commands on two projects yesterday, mostly to quickly process 3rd party surveys, as my Point Groups are already setup to handle internal point codes of course.

Robert, no, the IdPtGroup is a part of the Points module of the Sincpac tools. The EntityTracker is a tool that also will display, in a palette, the Primary PointGroup of a point as you hover over a point in the drawing, and it is a part of the Power module of the Sincpac.
