Revit fill patterns and AutoCAD hatch patterns use the same format for describing the pattern itself. Revit fill pattern files include some additional lines, added in comments (line starts with a semi-colon).

At the top of the file, two lines are added; one to indicate what unit type has been used as the basis for the definition ;%UNITS=INCH or ;%UNITS=MM and one to indicate what version the pattern file is. The current version is 3.0; so ;%VERSION=3.0

For each pattern, a comment line is added after the header line, to indicate whether the pattern is a MODEL or DRAFTING pattern: ;%TYPE=DRAFTING or ;%TYPE=MODEL.

The revit.pat and revit metric.pat files that ship with Revit have extensive header comments that explain all of this in more detail. These also contain patterns which you can examine as examples of correct formatting. The Revit on-line Help also has an article, with two sub-articles, with more information on custom patterns.

Hi thanks for your reply. Im sorry but can you pls elaborate more what your saying i think its an interesting topic. But do you think it is possible that revit get the stone pattern from autocad into revit? Other .pat from autocad are ok in revit. But the marble.pat i cannot import it in revit because revit is saying the pattern is a large scale.

Please send to support (at) hatchkit.com.au and we'll take a look at it.

I'm baffled why such a large pattern should exist

The marble.pat is imported from autocad. I need to import it in revit because this pattern is their standard in Autocad. Ok sending the file now. thanks

    Thanks for that.

The pattern that you sent me contained 1385 line definitions. most of which are redundant. There are quite a few patterns out there which contain redundancies as discussed here: http://www.hatchkit.com.au/faq.php#Tip9 and this is just another example.

HatchKit's AutoArrange function reduced that to 45 line definitions with identical appearance to the original and file size of 4.5Kb rather than 116Kb.

Both the original and the revised pattern versions readily load to Revit 2016 as INCH DRAFTING patterns however the scale should be increased by about 50X to load as an INCH MODEL pattern - the pattern is far too small to load 1:1 and suffers from Revit's imposition of a minimum stroke length if loaded with a scaling between 5X and about 20X.

To create a MODEL version for this pattern of whatever scale you like:

    1. install the free HatchKit Add-In for Revit (From our website here or from the Revit Exchange).
    2. load the pattern to Revit as a DRAFTING pattern
    3. start the HatchKit Add-In
    4. click on the pattern to pop up the local editor
    5. change the pattern Type to MODEL
    6. select a scale suitable for your purposes.
    7. click the Add button

I hope this helps and have a great weekend.
