    Default Sheets Organization

    Hi there!

I am trying to find out if a project with more than 3 sheets..must have a cover sheet? I am trying to set a cover sheet on all projects that have more than 3 sheets. In the past this practice wasn't establish in my office. The info i got is that all projects with 3 sheets or more must have a cover sheet. Correct me if am wrong.

I've never heard of such a "rule", in my opinion it depends on company standards.
So if your company wants to set a standard where any project that has 3 or more sheets needs a cover sheet, sounds reasonable to me.

I've done projects where there were only 3 sheets including a cover sheet.. it depends on the project, the client, the scope of work and the intent of the drawings.
If they are "conceptual sketches for client review" then usually no cover sheet.

    My 2 cents

What I see most often on a cover sheet included:
    - Client and or Project Name*
    - Project Address*
    - Set type (i.e. Design Development or Construction Documents) and issue date
    - Team information (Architect, engineers, GC, etc.)
    - Sheet index*
    - Vicinity Map*
    - Project image or rendering
    - Code information

*Minimum I would expect to see on the first sheet ... cover or otherwise.

Basically, you need to figure out what information needs to be conveyed. Your regulatory agency will probably specify what information needs to be provided ... it's unlikely they will specify that a "Cover Sheet" is required. If all you need is something with the project name and address, then no, a cover sheet is not necessary as that should be on the titleblock for every sheet. A small remodel may not need as in depth a code study as a new construction, which may need its own sheet (or set of sheets). If you can get the minimum information on the first plan sheet, then a dedicated cover sheet may not be necessary. What I suspect is that if you have enough information that you have at least 4 sheets, you probably need a separate cover sheet because there won't be room on your first sheet.
