If I open my drawing from SSM and just plot normally, the font from the (xrefed) titleblock prints fine. However, if I plot from the SSM palette, the font prints like romans.shx. What would cause this?

Romans.shx is likely just set as your 'alternate font' in options.
Double check the Page Setup Override you're using to issue the plot(s) - it's probably not configured the same as the named Page Setup for your drawings.
If/when you get tired of dealing with Publish, Plot, PDFExport, etc., consider the Autopublish mechanism, which lets you produce PDF on SAVE (as example), and in less time than it takes for any of the other 'plot' methods.

Any difference?
