Default "too many missing elements, cannot open file" after upgrading to revit 2017.1.1

a week ago or two our office upgraded to Revit 2017.1.1 and since then two different teams (different models) have gotten the message that there are too many missing elements and the file is corrupt and cannot be opened. it seems as though this didnt start happening until we upgraded to Revit 2017.1.1.
Has anyone else run into this issue?

Seems like a known issue. Can't find a successful explanation for why, but there is a workaround, it's detailed, but it seems plausible:
