Template File is Not Saving Text Styles

New one on me, after using AutoCAD for about 25 years...

I've been creating and using template files for decades, no problem. Just within the last day or so, I started a new drawing using my template file and discovered most (but not all) of my text styles had vanished from the Text Style window. When I tried re-defining them, I was informed that the style already existed.

Is there a system variable or something that might be preventing all of my text styles from being displayed?

I've just tried starting from scratch to create a new template file.

I create a new text style, then go to create another new text style and the one I've just created vanishes from the list.

Seriously, WHAT THE HECK? This is the first time I have seen this in 25 years with AutoCAD. I can not find anything anywhere to explain this, and it is making me crazy.

I expect it is something simple and basic and I probably accidentally reset a system variable that I now can not track down.

What version of AutoCAD are you using? What do you mean by creating a template from scratch? Are you starting with the acad.dwt? I haven't created a template in years, we just take ours from last year and upgrade it each year, so I'd like to try it out.

We use AutoCAD LT 2017.

Right, when I say "from scratch", I mean starting with a default AutoCAD template and adding the layers and styles, then saving with a new name as a new .dwt.
