Question Lapped Purlins & Display in Roof Framing Plan

I'd be interested to see how others are handling this...

Typically the Roof Framing Plan is setup to be at coarse detail level so we only see the stick symbol layout.

I have a roof structure containing of Z Purlins. These are lapped at each grid line by 15% of their length. Technically their is only 4mm of offset between these two beam systems. However, graphically this is very difficult to read.

What I'd like to do is be able to have Revit show every second bay lines offset. So I thought I'd just go into the family for the beam, set the current stick symbol line to connect to a Yes/No parameter for "Stick Symbol Offset No" and then create another stick symbol line that is offset and connect it to another parameter "Stick Symbol Offset Yes". Then obviously put in a formula for these two instance parameters so they can't both be on at the same time.

However, there was no stick symbol line in the family at all... So not sure how to override Revit to not display this stick symbol and instead to show mine?

    Any ideas?

Actually, I just edited the Family Category Parameter & Setting and changed the mode for symbolic representation to "From Family"...

However, this still seems like something pretty fundamental. Interested in hearing how others resolve this issue and whether they think it should be built in (if its not already and i'm just missing it)

I have as well created a Stick line in the family but also added a Instance Visibility Parameter (Left and Right) for the Stick Line.

    I hope it make sense.

Thanks for sharing J, that's exactly what I did... Seems like it should be part of the basic functionality really though...

I have used the same method. I just toggle every second bay to show the symbolic offset. When you have symbolic rep set to from project I believe by default revit will show the stick symbol at the centroid of the member. Which is what you want to see in most cases . I do something similar as the method for the purlins for showing members below as a hidden offset line

I'll ask the question. Do you really need to show the laps in the first place?
Having done plenty of steel roof framing plans, we just covered the lapping with a note in the legend indicating they are 15%. For us, this issue was one of the rare times where it fell in the category of changing our output to suite Revit, rather than the other way around.
