Default Drawing appearance when xrefing in to new drawing not working as usual

I have an AutoCAD 2018 drawing that I have adjusted layer colors and linetypes to appear how I would like with my plot style. I then am xref-ing that drawing in to a new drawing to annotate on top of. However, the xref is not pulling all of the layer information that I adjusted before referencing. It is instead pulling all the layer information from the very original state of all drawings instead what I have adjusted them to look like. In the past, when I attach a reference, it pulls the layer information from the reference drawing at the time of insertion. Any idea why this is suddenly not working appropriately? Is there a setting somewhere that has been changed that I am unaware of?

    Thanks for your help!

VISRETAIN only affects whether or not layer changes to the child drawing layers are saved in between sessions.
It has no effect when initially attaching a drawing.

@twortman575 - what you are describing does not make sense. You work on drawing "A", then SAVE IT. Then you xref drawing "A" into drawing "B", and you're saying that the changes made to drawing "A" are not showing up.
That is essentially impossible, unless there is some quirk where "A" is already referenced in and then VISRETAIN would apply. But you say you are xrefing "A" into a new drawing.

Can you upload this drawing "A" (or a slimmed down version of it?)

Are you sure you saved the adjusted drawing A before referencing it into the other drawing B? The saved version is what was referenced in. Try changing VISRETAIN to 0 in drawing B then save, close, and reopen. Then change VISRETAIN back to 1 to keep any future xref layer changes.
