Default import CAD not where expected

I'm trying to import cad files into Revit details. I've issued the BASE command in ACAD, clicked on a line in the drawing to be imported, and then saved the file. I then use the Import CAD button in Revit, select Positioning: Manual - Base Point and click where I want it but I receive an error that none of the created elements are visible in the view. If I go to a 3-D view I see the imported cad drawing floating in space far from the insertion point, and in a different z-plane. What gives?

Revit's coordinate system is relative. Every Revit project has a Project Base Point that reflects 0,0,0 of that project, but it is not an absolute 0,0,0 like we're familiar with in CAD. I would make sure your CAD file is flattened. And, from 0,0,0 in CAD, if you draw a 20 mile diameter circle, all objects are contained within that circle. If not, then the CAD needs to be edited. Yes, you can import a CAD file with objects outside of the 20 mile limit, but it will cause problems.
