Question Unable to creating hole since a monthly Microsoft update

Yesterday I had to update the monthly Microsoft security files. Ever since then I can not add any type of hole except a .25" diameter clearance hole. No matter what I click on nothing changes. Short of reinstalling the software does anyone have any ideas what setting got changes?

Can you elaborate on your software and system specs, please?

I am running Inventor Pro 2014 on a Lenovo ThinkStation, Windows 7, Intel 2.4 GHz processor, 64 bit OS, 16 GB of Memory and 500 GB hard drive. According to others that I talked to this is a known problem with those running Inventor 2015 and older.

Since your issue appears to be tied to the the Windoze update, is it possible to roll that back? There may be an issue with the software loading/reading the thread.xls file. You might check that to see if it is corrupted, but if previously threaded holes/components/content center parts appear normal, then that file should be ok.

Try running a repair of the install, before a full reinstall. I have had luck, on occasion, going that route.

Those in my department that had not done the windows update did not have a problem until corporate forced the update last night. According to Autodesk this is a problem with Inventor 2015 and older. Corporate will not allow us to remove these updates doing a repair did not help. Our only recourse is to convince corporate to update Inventor to at least 2017, but would prefer 2018.

I work under contract for a number of clients. Some specify 2016, some want 2017 & others 2018. Always fun ensuring the correct version is running. Corporate is as corporate does, but installing 2018 seems to be a no-brainer considering it has been in use for over 1/2 a year. Vault, if used, will need to be updated as well.

    Good Luck!

I too am a contractor. I work on site for my client and will follow their rules. Now I will wait to see if they go with 2017 or 2018. One last question for you since it sounds like you are using 2018. I heard that starting with 2017 Inventor was now backwards compatible. I could open 2018 files in 2017. Is that correct or was someone dreaming?

Yes, it is true. I believe it is a function of the AnyCAD mechanism. The caveat is that is uses the "Derive" function. You can edit the derived part/assembly in 2017, but any changes will not carry forward to the 2018 version. I have not tested this on all inventor file types, though. However, 2018 idw's will not open in 2017, and will display the "...future version..." error.

I am not sure what Microsoft update it was, but the fix is a registry change. https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inven...7459212/page/2

    This may correct your problem.
