Controlling Family Type for a Nested Family - Revit 2017

This family was done in Revit 2017.

I am trying to create a family for a client.

I want to nest an array of rails in a host family. The array count will change depending on dimensions changing in the host family.

I tried using array formulas and couldn't get it to work well, so now I am trying the nested family approach.

I have created a Family Type parameter, but when I change it in the different types of the host family, nothing updates.

I am sure I am missing something simple, but can't get it to work at all.

any guidance would be appreciated.

You didn't connect the nested family to your parameter. Take a look at the image, when you select your nested family, look at the Options Bar, note the Label "label". Click on the drop down list box and assign the family to your parameter. Then changing types in the parent will change the nested family to match the types chosen for each type in the parent.
