    Default Civil 3D 2015 to 2018

We are getting ready to do the upgrade to 2018 from 2015. What should I be warned about in making the transition?

is 2018 better or should we go to 2017?

What happens to referenced blocks and details that are still in 2015? will my drawings loose reference until i open them in 2018?

One of the improvements to 2018 is much better handling for xrefs.

2018 is a new platform with many improvements, I'd recommend it, but since 2017 is on the 2013 platform it's an extra step for sharing files with folk still using older versions.

While Autocad 2017 uses the 2013 format and is backward compatible, civil 3d 2017 is not.

We're also on civil 3d 2015 and planning to skip 2017 and go to 2018 .... soon.

    To clarify a bit more.

Civil 3D 2005-2012 = not compatible with any other version. Can go up, but not down.

AutoCAD 2013-2017 = same DWG format

Civil 3D 2013-2016 = same DWG format (or course) and same Civil 3D format - all interchangeable, backwards and forwards (99% at least)
Civil 3D 2017 = on an island. Same DWG format as 2013-16, but the Civil 3D internals are not backwards compatible.

Civil 3D 2018 = new DWG format (to match AutoCAD), and not backwards compatible with any other Civil 3D either, of course.

    Those who know, can't say.
    Those who say, don't know.

Join the beta testing team and you can drive the new versions before they are released.

The current 2019 versions in the Architecture Engineering & Construction Collection do not include Civil or Map, they're still only available in 2018 or older. I'm using the 2018 version with all the current updates and it works great. I'd wait two months to install the 2019 version. Lots of updates for AutoCAD, Map & Civil 3D the past few years. Those who install the first week it's released seem to be late round beta testers.
