dwg freezes

I am working on a drawing that has an xref attached. periodically it will freeze and a blue barber pole appears at the bottom of the screen
that say "please wait: formatting text" it usually make 2 or 3 passes before it goes away. i have run audit and recover and it still does this.

You mean this, but with a different message?

I don't think there's anything to fix. CAD is finding something that needs to update in the XREF. I have seen CAD tell me it can't update annotative text if the XREF is open. Are you changing up your scales? Because that could bog the drawing down when it updates the XREF. Depends on some variables like where the XREF is located compared to you or how big it is.

Edit: A little googling on the phrase "please wait formatting text" indicates that if it's anything it's something to do with the type of text you are using.

With so many fully supported fonts installed with Windows and AutoCAD it's best to avoid purchasing or downloading others that often create grief latter on. I've used the "LT Bt" from AutoCAD's "Swiss721" font family for many years as it's very legible and uses less space than most.
After using Arial Narrow for smaller drawings as it uses even less space I noticed it was no longer on my home PC but was able to download it from link: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...4-55ebd3f40d40

Had a long discussion once with with a user who insisted his company's drawings standards require using the font they had purchased years before.
