Default Combining imported objects as multiple family types

We have multiple objects (some furniture stuff modeled in 3dsMax) which we'd like to combine in a single family. We can easily import these in Revit using DWG and save as separate families but we still can't figure out how to combine all in a single family so that instead of having 10+ families for the different variations of the same chair, we'll load only one family.
Hope the explanation makes any sense.
    Thanks!

If you make it a shared family you can control it at the project level for any family it's nested into.
But if I'm hearing you right what you should be doing is creating one family that had 10 nested families loaded in it.
I'd suggest placing a family and adding a label to it as a family type selector.
Or you'll need to add a yes/No parameter for which one is visible for each type.

On a side note, I'd never import cad into families. Bad things can happen. But I'm a purist.

David, thank you for your help! The yes/no parameter to control the visibility of the different geometries will work for us.
["I'd suggest placing a family and adding a label to it as a family type selector." - Not sure how to do this though?
We need to bring into Revit some 3d models of upholstery furniture created in 3dsMax so we just need to use whatever the imported CAD option gives us...
