Surfaces in Civil 3D are TINs. Triangulated Irregular Network. A solid doesn't work with a TIN. Here is a quick bit of information on a TIN. https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/civil-3d/learn-explore/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2019/ENU/Civil3D-UserGuide/files/GUID-D0FCED34-D68F-42D2-A6FB-14C454CA57FA-htm.html

Opie's method makes it easier to add spot elevations, as I tend to have to use a temporarily offset object to snap my labels to.

But, oh how I wish we could just use actual 3d objects and tell Civil 3D to use specific faces of it as surface definition data.
My method is used for modeling purposes. Our model is then data referenced into sheets for display and labeling. We need to make it simpler for drafting to label the correct locations. I have enough issues with my drafters getting spot elevations in the correct location at curbs.
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.
