field to finish

the company wants to start using more of the field to finish capability of civil 3d.
we currently have trimble survey pro data collectors.
any suggestions and/or info on how and where to start this process? i've watch a few videos, but they weren't very informative as far as the whole start to finish process.
i.e. setting up the data collector to talk to the software.

do we have to start using the survey database function? or can we just code linework in the field and use the points import function in civil 3d to bring linework
into the drawing and have it connect the dots. at this point we don't need to have survey figures, just linework, if that's possible.
