Default cut roof appears dark in shaded view

I have created an in-place roof family as a void to cut into a roof and create an integral gutter (A gutter that resides completely within the volume of the roof). In all shaded views the internal surfaces of the cut roof appear dark irrespective of the roofs internal material. Both the roof family and the gutter void are new construction phase. The dark color of the cut roof material remains the same no matter what orientation I change a 3-D view to. The lighter color at each end of the gutter shown in the attachment is the wall that the gutter cuts through.Does anybody know what setting governs this and if I can make it appear lighter? Thx.
