Pipe Network slows down all dwg files associated with pipe network

Recently my company started utilizing the pipe network feature in Autocad Civil 3d. We are continually having issues with slow performance with any base file that contains a pipe network and any layout sheets that have the pipe network XREF in. It is taking several minutes to copy, save, open, and print any of these files. Whenever you try one of these commands the task bar says "Scanning the drawing" and will then freeze for minutes. In the design base file is a XREF of the land plan and a data shortcut for the surface of the area along with the proposed pipe network. We normally have two networks one for sanitary and one for sewer. Each of these networks could be roughly 2,000 LF or less. Can anyone think of any reason as to why these files are so slow?

Could be 100 different things.
What version of Civil 3D are you using?
You are simply using XREFs and not data shortcuts?
Can you zip a couple of sample drawings that exhibit this behavior and post it here?

you can try auditing the drawing, i have found that this sometimes works for me. other times i have found that if you remove the xref drawings and replace the xref's with data shortcuts it helps.
