    Default Elevation - Associated Datum?

In an elevation view, the properties show 'associated datum' under Extents. I can't populate this field. The help file just doesn't say anything about it. What is it?

When you select an grid (datum) from the dropdown list, Revit seems to move and keep associated the cut line of that elevation to that specific grid (datum) you just selected. So sometimes some projects might have some naming procedures like naming elevation/sectiom (every elevation is also a section at the end) with the grid names, that opiton makes sure that your view is exactly on the dedicated grid and be on that as you might make changes on grid placement.

When you create an Elevation you can use the option Attach to Grid, for example the Framing Elevation type checks this option by default. When that is used the view's cut plane is associated with that grid, moved to the same place, if the grid moves the view's cut plane does too. You can assign a Grid to the view if it is parallel to the view. Place a grid and then select an elevation that is parallel to it. You should find it is possible to assign that view to the grid.
