convert point format (descriptions)

is there a way to convert a point format from one way to another. i.e. if i have a txt file that shows a N, E, P#, description and EL, and the description is say TOB or TOC,
I need to be able to convert every instance of TOB to a different code number, like 1-2a to follow a clients format. there's a long list of different codings that we don't have
time to memorize or thumb thru a long list in the field. would like for the crew to do there normal procedure and figure out a way to convert in the office. any ideas or
appreciated.

Change the file extension from a .txt to .csv. Open in excel, and use find and replace as much as necessary. Or if you wanted to be a bit safer you could just insert a filter to organize the description alphabetically and manually replace each portion of similar description to what you want it to be. After you're all done you can rename it back to a txt extension. I've done this a lot when exporting out of Leica Cyclone's Virtual Surveyor for Point Cloud extraction (as it can only spit out a txt file). We're also a company that works through csvs rather than txts and we're talking about going purely txts because we can just convert it to csv for the edits, then convert it back.
