You can go to Settings>Options and then to the File locations Tab. Under the Default Template File location, change the template name to something like "none.rte"

Now when you open Revit, it wont open a template. You will get a Dialog box telling you it cant find none.rte, but just click OK.

Now you can go to Open and get an existing project, or to New and then select your template.

Hmm... no difference on my install... fragmented hard drive? OS glitch? Too many programs or services running?

I'm beginning to think it has to do with our network infrastructure. We validate against a server and our two "remote" offices are on a VPN and project folders on each are pre-mapped when we boot up. I think I'm suffering from excessive "browsing" I'll have to experiment to prove...thanks Wes.

Are you running network licenses across a VPN? That could be a major challenge, from what I understand...

No, but we could...I've tested it. In fact I access our license server at home via a VPN tunnel (and it's a dial-up connection). This way I can go home and do stuff at night (not wife approved however )and not have to go back to the office (45 min drive). I think the slow down has to do with the fact that our two remote offices are "mapped" to a few drive letters when we log on. I'm going to disconnect them to see if I notice a change. I'll be surprised if I don't....
