    Default Borrowing Licenses

In AutoCAD 2006, how do you borrow a license from the network server without actually having the computer already on the network?

I know that if you go into AutoCAD, on the Tools menu you can borrow a license, but that is for the computer that is already connected to the licensing server. What if an employee needs to work from home over the weekend? How can I borrow a license so he can use it at home without actually bringing his computer in and setting it up on our network?

I believe the only way is setting up a VPN connection where he can connect to the network over the internet.

Do you have the Portable License Utility installed? This utility should allow you to transfer your license to a different computer. The first time it is used, you will be required to transfer a file to the second computer which already has AutoCAD installed. Remember to transfer your license back or you will not be able to use the original CAD installation after 24 hours.

Granted, this may depend on your license agreement. Here at my office, which is a multi-seat stand-alone license, I am able to transfer the license between work and home.

    Hope this helps.

We are using a network license server. I have used the PLU before in other versions, but don't see it installed with 2006. I'm wondering if Autodesk removed it from 2006 or if they hid it in the network version.

    Hi

See if any of the following AutoCAD 2006 White Papers help -

"Planning a Successful Network Installation of AutoCAD 2006 or AutoCAD 2006-Based Products"

"Installing the Network License Manager for AutoCAD 2006 or AutoCAD 2006-Based Products"

"Creating Deployments for AutoCAD 2006 or AutoCAD 2006-Based Products"

    "Benefits of Network Licensing"

"AutoCAD 2006 Network Licensing Questions and Answers"

Links to the above five titles can be found here.

    Have a good one, Mike

After reading through the white papers it appears that Network License users are short changed and have to rely on VPN access to be able to work from home. I don't understand the logic behind this. I can't figure out why Autodesk would want the Network Licensing to not use the PLU like the standalones. Its already automating the process, why not allow the use of the PLU also?

I will be bringing this up in the beta forums and see if I can get an answer as to why the PLU is not allowed.
