Irregular Light Source

I am trying to create a light source that follows an irregular floor opening but am having trouble doing so. I tried starting with the linear lighting template but couldn't modify the existing linear source to my irregular shape. I could however paste the line I am trying to use as a light source into the template but cannot make it into a source. Another alternative would be if I could make a profile with a light source in it and sweep that along my irregular floor opening, but I haven't managed to do that either. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Would nesting linear fixtures in a host work? I believe that the light source in a light fixture will generate light when hosted if it is shared.
