Default Some families editable in v8, some arent?

I want to change some things on doors/windows, etc...but sometimes the option to edit them directly within the project are greyed out? Why is this?

Do I need to go to the parent file and change it then reload it again, what is different about some being editable and others not?

    ty!

it may have something to do with the family you are trying to edit is a family from the content directory. You have to "save as" rather than just save, and that may be why you cant edit and reload? I may be wrong however?

The ability to edit from the project is based on the family version it was created. If you load a ver. 6 family, it will not be editable from the browser. The solution is to export the family the old fashion way. Open, upgrade and reload. Now you'll be able to edit directly from the project.

    Aaron,
I've been having the same problem, but how does one export the family? When I right click it, the only options I have are delete, rename & reload. The other problem is I can't find the family anywhere else in the system files even after extensive searches. It seems to reside only within the template.

Not only can you not reload these families, you can't rename them in the project either. Aaron's quite right -- if you have an old family that you're using, open it and save the family in the latest version of Revit and THEN import it into your project.

The problem I have is probably different because I can't find the family to open in order to save. I can see it in the browser and use it ( it's a door tag) but just can't find it anywhere else!? Any ideas?

It probably only exists in the project. Select File>Save to Library>Save Family and see if it is on that list.
