    Cool faster start up

I was at an autocad user group meeting a few months ago and someone mentioned how to get Autocad's logo not to come up - This for some reason takes a while. I wrote it down but now that I am actually using 2006 I don't understand what I wrote. Does anybody out there know what I am talking about? or have an idea on how to make autocad load faster?

    Thanks,

    Dawn

Try placing /nologo into your shortcut.
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.
You will get a quicker response from your fellow AUGI members than if you sent it to me via a PM or email.

    Hi

Just to offer a little more info on this subject...

Check out the following Technical Documents on the Autodesk web site under the Knowledge Base section -

ID: TS66634 - Add startup switch

    ID: TS22957 - Startup switches

    Have a good one, Mike

Getting rid of the logo helps. For someone that does the bulk of their work in AutoCad I would also suggest never closing the program. I leave AutoCad up and running at all times.
AutoCad could almost be a desktop replacement for me

~nods~ I second that... I start it up first thing in the morning and leave it up even when I'm not using it.

    Cool Re: faster start up

You can also use a higher Prefetch in XP, which tells the operating system to save more of the memory settings used to access AutoCAD. I've got mine set so that even after a reboot I can access AutoCAD in less than a 2 count.

I'm not quite following you here, could you explain how you do this? (use small words, I'm slow... thx)

Computers do what you tell them to do, when you tell them to do it.
If you want to start a program, you double-click the icon and the program loads.
To help speed up the process, Windows XP tries to predict what you want before you want it.
Using its prefetch capabilities, Windows XP tries to load the programs you need before you need them.

First things first, is your XP using the Prefetch folder C:\windows\prefetch?
It's kind of like a Temp folder and sometimes will need to be cleaned out to make things faster...

If this folder is empty then your Prefetch is turned off.
This is when it gets tricky as it involves editing the registry.. .not recommended for everyone..

To change the registry settings for prefetching, start the Registry Editor by selecting Run from the Start menu, typing regedit in the Open text box, and clicking OK. When the Registry Editor window opens, navigate through the left pane until you get to this hive:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

Prefetch is a good point..........however, in most office settings unless the user has
admin rights, nothing can be changed. The IT department here has no knowledge of the
prefetch folder and strongly urges leaving the registry alone.

Being a computer tech guru in this day and age, I just sit here dreaming of Admin rights.

Good point, I often forget that not all the experts work in the IT Department

However I would encourage people to take these kinds of issues TO their IT department and at least ask them to investigate the possibility that it might make things more efficient and thus more profitable. You might offer them beer and/or food as a bribe, they typically like that =)
