    Question Layer Standard

I am an intern at a design build firm and was given the task of correcting/fixing our layer standards. Right now our detail database has over 700 different details that we use regularly. The problem is that when we insert a block detail into a new drawing we get alot of useless layers that come with it. Looking at the details i find that they were drawn very poorly when it come to which layers they used. I was wondering if there is a easy way of fixing either the block detail so that when i insert it to the new drawing it only brings in certain layers. Also i was wondering what the best way is to create a standard layer template with all the different layers that we use from project to project so that all our drawings have standard line weights and so on.

    Thanks for the help.

I would go through several of the details and see which types of layers are similar or that can be combined. Unfortunately, you will most likely go through each drawing before you are done and convert the layers to the desired format. In my office I use a format similar to the AIA Layer Standards.

donnachiej, I second what Richard said, and, in reference to the second part (setting up a standard layer template), I recommend opening autocad's help file and searching the index for Template > Creating, there is a link to a similarly useful topic in there called 'use a template file to start a drawing'.

template files can specify the following:
    Unit type and precision
    Title blocks, borders, and logos
    Layer names
    Snap, Grid, and Ortho settings
    Grid limits
    Dimension styles
    Text styles
    Linetypes
    Good luck.

If you have Express Tools, Layer Merge works wonders. Combined with Layer Walk to see what's on each layer.

The best practise is to create blocks on the 0 layer. Blocks created on the 0 layer inherit the properties of whichever layer they are inserted on. Also, as someone else mentioned purge those files.
