Polylines, Circles become faceted

I apologize for my low level of knowledge of AutoCAD. I am a new user and am generally picking it up by myself.
I have found that sometimes my polyline or circle objects become much more angular after some types of operations (is simplification the correct term for this?). I have a very clear example in a circle that turned into an octagon after a move. I selected all of the objects in the drawing, specified the move command, chose a base point, and entered new coordinates. There were 404 objects in the drawing including a raster image. The circle appears as an octagon though its properties indicate that it is circle.
The same operation applied to the circle alone does not appear to have the same result.
What kind of operations cause this and how can I prevent this from happening?
