Default Existing Block does not update when new Block is inserted

I have a drawing that when I insert an existing block that has been updated, my drawing containing the existing block doesn't update. Does anyone have an idea why this would happen?

The updated block is in a separate file?
Are you browsing to that file and not just inserting another copy of the block that is already defined in the host drawing?

Yes, the updated block is in a seperate file. And when I try to insert that dwg file (by browsing to it) into the original drawing, I get the message "Duplicate definition of block XXXX ignored".

That sounds as if the file that you are trying to insert contains a block with the same name as the block that you are already using. If so, the file would need Purging.
