When I do a section view the view only shows 1/2 of the roof. The top is missing.
Also my east elevation is showing a cross section although the elevation arrow is 50 feet or so away from the exterior wall.

Section and elevation views have both "cut planes" and the potential for "crop boundaries". The crop boundary can be active even if it is not visible and may be cutting off the top of your roof. Check the properties of the section view to see if crop region is on, but is, perhaps, not visible. If so, make it visible and adjust it appropriately, or turn it off completely.
Elevation cut planes, unlike section cut planes, do not have to conincide with the elevation symbol. Take a look at the image provided. Although the elevation tag is well outside the model, the blue, cut plane for the elevation is inside the structure, effectively cutting the geometry in the resulting view.
