    Default Piping ISO BOM 3D

Hello, we are looking for a 3rd party software for plant designing.

Once the 3D model is drawn (buiding, equipement, pipes, etc,...) we should get automaticly ISO's, Bill of material, etc...
Also a package to draw P&ID P&FD would be great.

We already heard of Autoplant (Bently) and CardWorx (COADE)

Do you know other good packages (from experience)
What does autodesk itself recommend to use?

Autodesk don't really recommend any particular one but they are currently looking at this field of design. I filled out a questionnaire a couple of weeks ago for them to contact me to survey, it looks like this field may be their next big push - maybe buying one of the vendors?

We use Cadworx here but we also looked at Plant 4D by CEA http://www.cea-int.com as it is application independent and can be used with both AutoCAD and Microstation. For the ISO bit you will find that most use a third party app called isogen.

I'm going to move this from the Customization forum to this one, as I believe it will be better served here, thanks.

On the whole yes although we are only doing small changes and nothing major. Took a while to get all our piping specs in but that would be the same with any package.

Takes a lot of effort to get the designers to use it as they are experienced and don't like this newfangled technology

Autoplant is a really good product - was a product purchased by Bentley a few years ago from Rebis and I understand that they will continue to develop and support this product for Autocad users partly because of the large user base. It is a real pity that Autodesk missed the opportunity to buy this one.

Isogen is the product of choice for ISOs - it interfaces with most of the key plant design products and integrates data with manufacturing systems.

I would note, that if Autodesk were serious about this field of design they would do well to follow the example of SmartPlant - this package is a relatively new design and has a common working methodology for all modules.

Basically the older designers we have will do their best not to use the software and produce drawings using a more time consuming traditional method. Some even state that they are to old to learn something new so they have to be coerced. Once they have been using it a while though they tend to appreciate the software and become happy to use it. I guess there's an "initial fear" of something new.
