Default Modelspace and Paperspace training and tutorials

I've been using Autocad since 1987. All of my drawings have been 2-D. I learned to set the scale of the drawing sheet first (ie 1/8"=1'-0"), then start drawing. (This goes back to the days of the MVSETUP command.
Now, I want to learn how to draw a model, and use the page layouts. Can anyone recommend a good reference or training resource. I'm a fair hand at the mechanics of Autocad (lines, circles, plotting etc.), but this Model/Layout represents a new concept of drawing for me (layouts, models, viewports, etc.)
My budget won't allow training seminars, but I believe I could follow a good text on the subject. Any suggestions?

How do you currently draw in your model space? Is everything drawn 1 to 1?

    Hi

Have you tried the forum search facility, there is an awful lot of information already gathered here...

Below are just a couple of posts, containing links to information / resources that I think you may find useful...

Cool Re: Modelspace and Paperspace training and tutorials

I have showed and explained how to set up viewports to several people who had difficulty understanding the concept. However, I have never really generated a step by step procedure. If you like, I can try to create something but it will take a little bit of time.

What I always say to start with is get a piece of paper and cut out a rectangle in the middle of the sheet. This sheet we will call paperspace and should look similar to a picture frame. You have a border and than a hole (the viewport in autocad) in this sheet of paper. Now place the sheet of paper over something. The item under the paper that you see through the hole is your drawing or model space.

To sum up, basically paperspcace is like picture frame and model space is the picture in the frame.

That's pretty much it for starters. Let me know if you would like to have more info.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to look into the publications and tutorials.

I currently set the drawing using a template. If I'm doing a building floor plan, I can determine that a 1/8" scale will fit a 24"x36" page. So I use a template already set up for this. The LTSCALE, TEXT size, dimension arrows, dimension offsets, etc. are already set up in the template. The title block will be imported as a block, and scaled up to 96 times the size. (I should mention that I work totally in model space, no sheets or page layouts. If I have another sheet to draw, I start another file.
    )
The fundamemtal difference is a conceptual one. My model is drawing 1:1, and my title block is inserted and scaled up to fit the final drawing scale. I then print out using the 1/8"=1'-0" scale setting in AutoCAD's PRINT dialog box.

With Paper space, the paper is 24" x 36", and the model is scaled DOWN in a viewport to fit the page.

On the finished drawing, I want the text to be 1/8" tall, the linetypes (hidden, center, divider, etc.) to have the same spacing, hence the LTSCALE setting. (All of this used to be taken care of by the MVSETUP command in AutoCAD.)

Here's a good one for you. It's one of the handouts from AutoDesk University from the class called Lost in Paperspace.

It's a good class and should explain things pretty well.

Try thinking of it this way - the model is full size in modelspace. The paper (border) is full size in paperspace. The vport scale just allows you to see both at the same time.
