    Question Multiple Drawings

Hi I've been an Augi member for a long time, but this is the first time I've used the forum. I just loaded the land desktop 2006 and the civil 2006 with windows xp and the latest service pack. I can't open multiple drawings. Can anyone help? I tried the SDI in the system variable and it has a default of 2. But the only valid numbers are 0 and 1. I tried both and it would not let me change it. the only drawing open is the default "drawing 1". Did I miss something in the installation?

I'm going to move this from the New Users forum to this one, as it will be better served here. I'm also going to remove your other post on the same topic. Thank you.

Because of the project based interface, LDT is a single drawing only software. If you want to open multiple drawings for things like cut and paste, or sheet sets, etc. You should open your drawings in Map, which, I believe, is part of the installation of LDT.

Along the same lines, I often open multiple instances of LDT and work on two or more projects at the same time. Is this a no-no?

Tim, you can do this, BUT if you work with different projects. Because Land opens and lock some files within a project. And it's possible that you will get an error accessing file.

Yes, this can be done safely with multiple instances of your Land (ARG) profile assigned to multiple desktop shortcuts, each pointing to a different temporary files location. I learned this recently from an old member who indicates this method to be around since the days of DCA.

    Thank you for the 411!

I haven't had any problems doing it, but I wanted to be sure.

I've done it in the past as well without any problems. However, it was brought to my attention that opening multiple sessions of LDT has the potential of corrupting drawing files. I have had corrupted drawing files at times, but rarely and I never associated it with having multiple sessions open. I just figured, better safe than sorry, and use Map for any multiple drawing needs that I have.

    Thanks, ammon.

I generally only have multiple instances if I'm copying linework or plotting, but I will be more careful of what I have open in the future.

I suggest using MAP to query in those objects instead of that copy process.
Also it is possible to create multiple Land profiles to place multiple project's data into separate TEMP folders to avoid any chance of data loss/corruption. A technique I learned from my teacher that goes all the way back to DCA.
