Unhappy Drawing size too big, Is there a way to optimize the dwg?

    Hi all,

I have imported shape files into a autocad drawing, the size has become 28 megs, i have no blocks to purge. Is there anyway i can reduce the size of the drawing?

    Thanks

    Hi

Maybe start by browsing the following couple of posts...

The drawing file size is large, but there is hardly anything in it.

    Hi

Plus you could try plugging the following search criteria into the forum search facility...

    Key Word(s): Size + *Large*

    Size + *Huge*

Should return plenty of helpful / useful results, lots of reading material.

    Have a good one, Mike

First off, did the file size increase right after importing the shape files? If so, I seriously doubt that the links previously offered are going to help. This doesn't sound like a layer filter or block purge problem.

Before wasting time trying to reduce the size, what is in the drawing after importing the shape files? Run the list command, select all. How many entities are there? Do you have several thousand polylines, each possibly containing several thousand vertices?

It's not difficult to create a huge drawing this way. If this is the case, you could try weeding the polylines. Short of that, it may be that your large drawing size is required to store the amount of data you have imported.

Also consider - what do you need to do with this data? Can you perform the necessary tasks, then possibly get rid of the imported shape file data? Can you break it up into sections, xref them in when needed?

    Good luck.

I have lots of polylines in my drawing. I have imported city of los angeles districts, streets (minor and major), which now my drawing size is 44 megs. Is there a way that i could keep all the data and still reduce the size of the drawing. I do need to see all the data.

Lots is relative... that is why I asked...

    Also you could use QSELECT.

Without knowing more details, all I can suggest is that you weed the polylines (if they are polylines) to eliminate unneeded vertices.
