I used to do all caps. My current employers standard it to use sentence form and I dislike it but they also right justify text with notes on the left side of drawings. Both things make the drawings look bad. These are things that I am going to fight to change and this thread will help. Thanks.

ALL CAPS LOOKS BETTER AND IS EASIER

While I've always used caps, even on the board, I prefer lower case for legibility when called for. It's like putting the correct em-PHA-sis on the right syll-A-ble. I also drop the case on plural acronyms, like VOCs or PCBs. Some may disagree but McLAUGHLIN reads easier to me than MCLAUGHLIN.

When appropriate, I prefer the sentence case as well. It all depends on the final product. If it is a small lot survey, I see no reasone to use all caps. The print is produced to read well at the chosen scale, and is most likely not going to be reduced.
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.

On hand drawing we always use caps simply to ensure it is legible. But on cad we tend to always use caps and lower case eg. 'Second Floor Plan' simply for presentation reasons.

Just my own humble thoughts, but is it the case that engineering drawings are primarily to convey information (I mean rather than a presentational tool) and therefore notation is a matter of fact and so caps easily and unemotionally states what is required, and only read by those in the construction industry.
Where as architectural drawings occasionally (not always) need try to put things across in a slightly more friendly manner for example to be presented to local residents.

I personally feel both methods have their uses as indeed does the use of different font styles and text sizes etc.

ASME Y14.2M-1992 paragraph 4.3 states that "Upper case letters shall be used for all lettering on drawings unless lower case letters are required."

And I follow it. The only time I go to mixed or lower case is when using all caps would cause confusions. Examples: mm, Hz, MHz. Capice.

and, in engineering, is the standard today and for the foreseeable future.

That ASME standard kinda' doesn't make sense. Who's gonna' make all caps or not a requirement?

Well there are times where symbols for an object may be designated in lower case as well as times where the parts themselves may have lowercase lettering, so there are times where lower-case is required.

Thanks for helping to clarify, Dilbert. I thought I was making things clear with the examples I gave, but I guess I didn't.
