I suppose if I want to run Revit on a Mac I will have to include another few hundred bucks for Windows 7. !!!!
Some would also call it foolish to pay a premium for a Porsche when you can get a Ford Escort for a lot cheaper. Or to pay extra at the local bistro when Denny's is an option. I'll pay the premium for a Mac, the experience is that much better. And when I pay $50 for Acorn rather than $500 for Photoshop, and $80 for iWork rather than $500 for Office, and use the built in PDF editor rather than $500 Acrobat, and... Well, in the very near term the Mac is actually cheaper as well as better. In fact those three pieces of software alone make a 15" MacBook Pro nearly free.

I guess I'm a bit of a pragmatist when it comes to computing. I spend most of my time looking at the screen, so a case that looks better than another is of little value to me. The Mac "experience" is also one that has little value either, since I don't really like the experience that much. On the software side Open Office, Gimp and PDF 995 offer a good value at little cost as well. The extra cost of the Mac is hard to justify on a practical level, but if it gives you more pleasure to own a Mac then that is all you need as a justification. I've owned enough computers and cars over the years to have become largely resistant to the allure of their "coolness" factor. Though I will admit to thinking that my Curta calculator is pretty cool.

Joe, the coolest thing about my Mac? I have not crashed a single time in three years of ownership. Anything running a Microsoft OS will likely puke and cost you money and time at least once a month. And that is if you are starting the machine cold daily and loosing time waiting for it to boot. Oh, and the very intelligent energy saving tools, that spin down not just internal hard drives but external ones as well; that saves power, money and global warming. The pragmatic stuff is actually pretty compelling in my book. The fact that I get to make beautiful things while working on a beautiful thing is just icing on the cake.

Take a look at this for some "pragmatic" rational.

I am still investigating the purchase of a new Mac Book pro, but have discovered that the graphics card that comes with the i7 model is not on the Autodesk list of approved graphics cards. Is this going to be a problem? Is anyone having success with one of these models? I intend to use Bootcamp and Windows 7.

I'm running the i7 mbP, 8gb, hi-res display with VMware Fusion, Windows 7, Revit Arch, MEP, Structure, Navisworks, AutoCAD (2010 &2011) and love it. No graphics card issues.

Just do it, you'll be happy. Of course you have 14 days to initiate a return if you are disappointed.

Side note... this mbP runs cooler than my previous which is a late 2008 model.

Since the graphics cards aren't "approved" you may not be able to display ambient occlusion.

Then again, just because your graphic card is capable of displaying ambient occlusion doesn't mean you'll be able to print.

It's going to be really unfortunate if Autodesk doesn't keep that list updated in a very timely manner. The reason the list is valuable is in helping to determine new hardware purchases - if none of the latest available video cards are on the list, it becomes even more worthless than it's already bordering on being. Most of the video cards on the list are from years ago. What is the priority here - testing five year old video cards, or testing video cards that are in current computers being sold? Apparently for Autodesk, it's testing five year old video cards.

With the exception of a few Nvidia Quadro cards, there really no information on video cards that have come out in the last 12 - 18 months (GeForce, Radeon and FirePro).

    As always with Autodesk...

I just had my last desk top pc die on me. I priced several other pc options and a re-conditioned imac. After all that i opted for the imac. I bought one to replace my last dead pc and so far it's performed admirably.

It always gives a warning about the graphics card but it seems to work OK.

IT folks are freaking out about adding OSx to their network. Does anyone have comments or suggestions for setting up the iMac w/Revit/Windows7, or suggestions on the network side?

It flies using Revit 2011 64.
I have a refurbished 17 MacBook Pro (4GB) running Parallels, Windows 7 and Revit Architecture 2011x64. It does have graphic problems. I turned off the Direct3d button but it still lags. Revit is the only thing I use Windows for and I've become very attached to the Mac programs so I would hate to switch back to pc....but Revit is my income so I may have to. I wondered if there are configure recommendations that will help or would it work if I upgraded to a newer 8 GB MacBook Pro.
I'm also having printer problems but I think that may be a Parallels issue.
