AutoCAD - Control on checking out drawings

We use vanilla Autocad with a 3rd party app to do mechanical design and coordination. Would vault help us with control on checking out drawings so no one else is working on the same drawing at the same time? I guess I'm asking will vault work as a EDM program for plain old AutoCAD?

That's basically what we need as well. Looks like the answers are not easy to find unless you are willing to experiment on your own and that can be very risky..
