    Default Work plane-based families

    What does this mean?
    Any examples or tutorials anywhere?

Work plane-based families can cut host
    ■ Work plane-based families can modify their host if they are created with the new family template, Generic Model face based.rft. Families created from the template may make complex cuts in the host. Instances of these families can be placed on any surface, regardless of its orientation. See “Creating Work Plane-based and Face-based Families”

Face based families will attach to any face. It doesn't have to be a work plane. One of the handiest new features in Revit 9.0! Create a face based model (use the generic model face based template), bring it into a project and it will attach to any face. It will even attach to a a stair tread! Face based voids will cut their host but only certain elements (walls floors roofs ceilings). There is a lot more info in the Revit manual, but so far I haven't found an actual tutorial.

    Thanks Joe
Is that the printed manual or the pdf version or are they one and the same? Are there any of these in the Metric or other family library?

I made a generic face based family (in this case, a full length mirror), thinking I could attach it to a reference plane. No luck - walls, floors, etc. no problem. But, a reference plane no dice.

It's the PDF manual which I am assuming is the same as the printed one. No examples. Not a one, thank you very much Autodesk.

I'm not sure what they mean by work plane based family. Perhaps the person who wrote it can chime in here and enlighten us.

A workplane based family can be placed on any face or workplane and will stay associated with that face of workplane as the project is modified.

An example would be a light that attaches to either a ceiling, a floor or a roof.

Which family template do you use to create a work plane based family?

    Any non hosted family template.

Under Settings >> Family Categories and Parameters , Check the box "Work Plane Based "
When loaded in a project, select a face or workplane to attach the instance to.

    Thanks BeeGee,

Here is the source of the confusion from the "What's new in this release":

New template for work plane-based families

    • Generic Model face based.rft You can use this template to create and place multiple instances of complex shapes, both solid and void, on any surface (such as planar and curved walls, floors, roofs, stairs, and reference planes). If the family is created as a void, the instance cuts its host only if it is a wall, floor, roof, or ceiling. When an instance of a void family is placed on a non-cuttable plane face, it will not cut. See Creating Work Plane-based and Face-based Families.
The Generic Model Face Based Family will not produce a work plane based family because it is a hosted family. So this is not a "new template for work-plane based families". Work plane based families are not new. Face based families are new. I think I have it straight now. Maybe.
