Default AutoCAD 2007 DWG version to 2000 DWG version - File size increases

Has anybody ran into this? I have an AutoCAD file done in 2006. I open it in 2007, then save it to a 2000 format.

The file size jumps from a 2mb drawing to a 9mb drawing.

As an experiment I started with a particular drawing and came up with the following:

    Original drawing - 3,776kb
    Saved as 2000 - 3,775kb
    Saved as 2004 - 2,021kb
    Saved as 2007 - 2,041kb

Any clues as to what is going on?

Sure. I can't explain a 2mb to 9mb jump, but your above example I likely can get you closer. Actually, 2004 files were smaller than 2000 files. I can't remember without looking, but it was something like a 20% decrease. It was one of the few times where the file formats changed and things actually got smaller. Many people didn't notice it (as a 2mb drawing file was suddenly converted to a 1.6mb or 1.7mb drawing file) but it was kind of a big deal if you were short on storage at the time. As far as your above example, as I recall, sometimes drawings created with newer versions have objects that 2000 can't read. So it essentially converts some of these to objects it CAN process. Thus creating more entities and larger size files.

The 2007 file format is a compressed fie, try zipping the 2002 version, it should shrink right down, while a 2007 wont
