Default Split Sketch based elements (ie, Floors, Ceilings, Roofs)

Summary: Have the ability to Split Sketch based elements (ie, Floors, Ceilings, Roofs), with a simple tool.

Description: Often times early in a project these items are placed as a large continuous slab. It would be nice as the project gets refined to divide these items into smaller components. I realize you can edit, then cut and paste the sketch lines. A divide or split tool would make this process faster and simpler for the users.

You could also consider using Parts. What you describe is one of the leading reasons parts were developed. However if they need to have different elevations Parts won't help.

Steve, are you talking about a bump or a recess in the floor or wall? It still can be done with parts using ‘show shape handles’ option. Unless you’re referring to something else, are you?

Well yes, you can drag grips to make a part thicker, thinner or "higher" but it isn't precise, without some extra effort to ensure that it is. For example if I need to make one pour of a slab a bit higher (higher elevation). If I use the Spot Elevation tool on a floor it can adjust it precisely. If it is two adjacent slabs that pour separately but they step up/down next to each other then the spot elevation is convenient, using two separate floor slabs is convenient. With some experimentation I imagine parts could provide the sort of splitting behavior many people are after.

I can also use Shape Editing to slope the original overall floor as required and it can "manage" the parts. It's just not as simple as doing it all to the floor itself.

Also helpful would be accounting for the flip side of this: when the element is divided into two for partial demolition, then the design later changes and the elements should once again be a single thing in the model.

Steve: I haven't had time to investigate Parts. Would they allow me to "merge" (in the toposurface sense) two previously divided elements back into one?

Yes they would, do allow that.
