the answers to this could vary depending on a. what program you are in (acad or a vertical? what version) or b. how you're creating your pdf (via toolbar or plot, and what program/driver used)
any more details could help. I use map2006 and plot with adobe acrobat 6.0 and my file sizes from a dwg are usually about 500 kb.

One trick I used to make smaller PDF was to plot to a DWF file then open the DWF and plot that into a PDF. That would reduce the size quite a bit. I was using Acrobat Writer which had problems creating large PDF from AutoCAD. Other PDF programs, I heard, don't have this problem.
If you put this "reduce pdf size" in Google, you will find lots of programs to reduce the size of a PDF-file. The sad thing is that almost all the progs are to pay.
